Jane Austen was born on 16 December 1775 in Steventon, Hampshire, England. Among her family members, her nickname was Jenny. She was born to George Austen and Cassandra Leigh. She was the seventh child and the second daughter of her parents. She grew up in a highly literate family because her father was an Oxford-educated clergyman and her mother belonged to an aristocratic family (Myer, 10). During her early years, she loved to read and was able to freely read the books from her father's library. This could have shaped her as a talented writer. Even though she had seven other siblings, she had a deep emotional bonds with Cassandra, Francis and Charles, the youngest Austen children. It is said that Jane loved her older sister Cassandra the most out of all the other siblings ( Myer, 32).
From her mother, she learned the essential practical skills of her time period, which is needlework, including embroidery. In 1783, at the age of eight, Cassandra and Jane were sent off to boarding school to pursue formal education. Education in those times meant learning a foreign language, music and dancing.( After they came back, the rest of their education was from the books they read and whatever their brothers and father could teach them.
Even though Jane started writing novels in 1790, when she was only fourteen years old, her first novel Sense and Sensibility did not appear until 1811. After two years Pride and Prejudice, Mansfield Park were published, in 1813. Pride and Prejudice was the hit novel of 1813. Emma was published in 1816. Persuasion and Northanger Abbey were published two years later, in 1818.
In 1816, she began to suffer from ill-health. Therefore she traveled to Winchester to receive treatment. On Friday 18 July 1817, Jane Austen died in the arms of her older and beloved sister Cassandra. According to her love for the Winchester's magnificent cathedral, she was buried inside it on July 24th.
