Khalil Gibran was born on January 6, 1883 in the mountainous area of northern Lebanon. When he was a young man, he emigrated to United States with his family. While he was here, he studied art and began his literary career. In Lebanon, his family was in poverty, therefore he received no formal education when he was young. As well as the regular school, Gibran was also enrolled in an art school nearby in Boston. School officials had to place him in a special class for immigrants , in order to make him learn English. When he was there, he was introduced to a well-known Boston artist, publisher, as well as a photographer named Fred Holland Day. He encouraged and supported Gibran's creativity. In order to absorb more of his heritage, his mother send him back to his homeland. While he was there, he got elected as the "college poet."
After several years, he returned back to Boston in 1902. In 1904 in Boston, he held his first art exhibition of his drawings in Day's studio. Gibran's best-known work is the book titled The Prophet. It is a book composed of twenty six poetic essays. It was one of the best selling books of the twentieth century in the United States. It have been translated into more than forty languages.
Much of the Gibran's work dealt with Christianity, especially the topic of spiritual love. Gibran died in New York City on April 10, 1931 due to cirrhosis of the liver and tuberculosis. He was buried in Lebanon according to his will. Gibran is considered as the third best-selling poet of all time, behind Shakespeare and Lao-Tzu.
