Bride and Prejudice is a 2004 romantic comedy movie set in India. It is a movie adaptation of the famous novel Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen.
The movie is set in Amritsar, India where the Bakshi family lives. Bakshi family consists of four daughters:- Jaya, Lalitha, Lakhi and Maya. Just like in the novel, Mrs. Bakshi wants all of her daughters to get married to wealth men and settled well. This family gets a proposal for Jaya from a guy called Balraj. Balraj brings his friend William Darcy with him to the wedding. During this time, Balraj falls in love with Jaya and just like in the novel, Lalitha think of Darcy as very proud and an arrogant man. later Lalitha meets Johnny Wickham, who makes Laitha misunderstand Darcy. Lalitha is attracted to Wickham. Even though Darcy warns her about Wickham, she does not trust him. She comes to know the truth about Wickham when Lalitha's younger sister try to run off with Wickham. The movie finally ends with two weddings, Balraj to Jaya and Darcy to Lalitha.
This movie is very successful in capturing Elizabeth Bennet's character from the novel, Pride and Prejudice. Lalitha also have the moment of self-realization when she comes to know the true intention of Johnny Wickham. The movie is successful in capturing the essence of the novel in every way, but in a unique Bollywood style.
